In 1993 the World Health Organization recommended that the drinking water standard for arsenic be reduced from 50 pg/l to 10 pg/l. Granular ferric hydroxide is the leading process technology that can be applied to groundwater sites to enable the impending standard to be met. Severn Trent Water decided to implement this technology at sixteen of its sites, but required confirmation of media availability. Development work with Bayer AG Germany, a world leader in iron oxide technology, led tothe production of a new generation of ferric media that could be quality controlled and whose supply was guaranteed. This paper details the development work, provides initial results from pilot plant trials and highlights how the media and adsorber systems are being implemented across the company. Includes 3 references, figures.
