WaterOne has mitigated a problem common to large distribution systems thathave outgrown their initial floating storage and have changed to below-ground,pumped storage to supply the large volumes of hourly peaking storage required.By using a strategically located elevated storage tank, designed for rapiddrawdown, minimum system pressures can be maintained for the most commonevents, such as major pumping equipment failure, large line breaks, or shortduration power outages, thus alleviating concerns over contamination due to lossof pressure during such events. The elevated storage also dampens pressuresurges during pump changes and would allow time to start emergencygenerators without loss of minimum system pressures caused by the lesscommon, longer duration power outages or other extended period events. Includes figures.
