Natural organic matter (NOM) is a precursor ofdisinfection byproducts (DBPs) such as trihalomethanes(THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs).Because these DBPs are known to be human carcinogens,DBP formation and NOM removal have beenextensively investigated. Although NOM is removedat various points within both conventional andadvanced treatment process trains, different NOMfractions are preferentially removed by differenttreatment processes. Therefore, each treatmentprocess contributes to different NOM profilesthrough a process train. Both THMs and HAAs weresignificantly reduced through the treatment processestested (61% for THMs and 69% for HAA9). Byusing one of the treatment processes discussed in thisarticle, water suppliers can predict the effect thetreatment process will have on finished waterquality. It is important, however, to note that thepredictions will vary depending on the initial qualityof the water. Includes 26 references, tables, figures.
