Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) is an emergingcyanobacterial toxin whose detection frequency isincreasing in water bodies worldwide. Coupled withthe changing climate the world is facing, the likelihoodof CYN entering water treatment plants is increasing. Results from this study indicate that the combinationof powdered activated carbon (PAC) and chlorinationcan provide a multibarrier treatment approach for themitigation of CYN, provided both treatment optionsare optimized. The dosing of PAC is subjective in mostwater treatment plants because of the high costs associatedwith its application. However, the model developedby the authors will aid in the derivation of a PACdose table that can be used to optimize PAC applicationfor CYN removal and significantly reduce capitalcosts by reducing the amount of PAC that is wastedthrough overdosing. Water suppliers will be able to usethe approaches described in this article to optimize theapplication of PAC and chlorine in their water treatmentplants to remove CYN. Includes 42 references, tables, figures.
