Removal of Cryptosporidium in softening plants was shown in this study to be comparable to removal of Cryptosporidium in conventional treatment. Log removal of aerobic spores, heterotrophic plate count(HPC), and turbidity did not correlate well with log removal of Cryptosporidium. Log removal of Cryptosporidium was three times the log removal of aerobic spores, HPC, and turbidity, indicating that removal of any of these parameters should be considered a conservative estimate of the removal of Cryptosporidium by softening.
