Using Dionex OnGuard solid phase sample preparation cartridges, a sensitive, convenient and rapid procedure was developed for bromate/bromide speciation in waters by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). When a sample was passed through an Ag cartridge (containing styrene-based sulfonic acid resin in silver form), bromide was completely absorbed as a precipitate of silver bromide, while bromate was unretained. Cations from the sample matrix and silver ion leached from the Ag sorbent were removed with cation exchange resin-based H cartridge. After the solid phase extraction pretreatment the residual bromide remaining in the aqueous phase was found to be less than 0.06 ug L-1 or even undetectable depending on the original bromide concentrations (less than 5 mg L-1 bromide) and the recovery of bromate was 96-106%. Capacity of the Ag cartridge to remove chloride coexisting with the analytes was also examined. Common cations and anions did not show significant interference with the determination of bromate. The detection limits for bromide and bromate are 52 and 57 ng L-1, respectively. Water samples of different treatment phases from a waterworks were analyzed, and the bromide results were close to those by ion chromatography, while bromate result was more reliable at <10 ug L-1. The recoveries of the spiked bromate and bromide in waters were in range of 91.8-107% and 86.3-110%, respectively. Includes 31 references, tables, figure.
