This paper considers three aspects of robotic arc welding of aluminum: coordinated motion control and weld path programming, penetration control, and joint tracking with through-the-arc sensing. Each of these have been tested and demonstrated as being capable of greatly improving the efficiency and reliability of robotic arc welding of aluminum. Several welding processes are considered, including gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and variable polarity plasma arc welding (VPPAW).
