Plug, claw, nub and gasketed closures are used on many billions of consumer, medical and pharmaceutical containers each year. These seals must not only be fluid tight, they need to cost a fraction of a cent and be easy to remove. This paper describes how contact pressure, the single most important factor in achieving an effective seal, is generated and maintained for various seal types. Techniques for predicting closure performance as a function of geometric design and material properties using non-linear finite element methods are also discussed.
