Prepreg fabrics are likely the oldest composite material form still in use today. Prepreg fabrics were first developed with the advent of fiberglass in the late 1890's and plastics during the 1930's. This material group is primarily manufactured from thermosetting resin systems, and represent almost 80% of the prepreg fabrics sold worldwide. A relatively new group of prepreg fabrics made from advanced fibers and thermoplastic resin systems is emerging, and promise to supplant thermoset prepreg fabrics in applications that can benefit from the inherent qualities of thermoplastics. Recreational products lead in the use of the materials, but new applications are being developed that further exploit the advantages of advanced thermoplastic prepreg fabrics.
