Aluminum alloysare increasingly used in the automotive industry to reduce the weight while maintaining structural integrity of the car bodies. However, new techniques including better process control and novel processes are needed to improve the formability of difficult-to-form aluminum alloys. This paper summarizes the results of a recent study on the formability of rectangular parts from aluminum alloy 2008-T4. Wrinkling and fracture limits have been determined and BHF control methods have been developed to eliminate defects, improve part quality, and increase the draw depth. A new process called viscous pressure forming has also been developed and a preliminary evaluation of this process using aluminum alloy 6111-T4 has been summarized.
