In glass-lubricated hot extrusion process surface quality varies at different locations of the extrudate, which can lead to rejection of the extrudate. This study is aimed at determining the effects of the extrusion process and die design parameters on the extrudate surface quality. A computational model, which uses the upper bound method to determine the metal flow and the lubrication behavior was developed to determine the metal and glass flow during extrusion. Prediction of glass film thickness and the glass runout are correlated with observed surface quality problems on the extrudate.
