A new approach to calculate tangential cutting force is proposed. This approach uses the relationship between ultimate strength of the work material, cross-sectional area of the chip and the number of inserts in cut to estimate cutting force, torque at the cutter and machining power. Milling tests were carried out using a torque dynamometer, high shear cutters at various cutting conditions and different workpiece materials to verify the new approach.
