In this paper, the results of the on-line identification of the cutting process on the macro level in side orthogonal turning is presented. A cybernetic concept of machining system proposed as a basis of identification treats the cutting process in a closed loop of the machine tool. The process is described by the estimation of the transfer function defined by the output/input energy relationship, or in other words by the values of the transfer function parameter estimates with respect to changes in machining conditions.
