The term retrofit is used to describe replacing a machine's old control system with a new one. Even though there are many different factors that can justify a retrofit project, justification is primarily based on increased reliability, increased performance, and new control feature availability. Retrofit work in addition to replacing the control can include such functions as replacing the machine's wiring, upgrading servomotors and drives, providing updated machine functions that are control dependent, or even remanufacturing the entire machine. Todays CNC controls, especially the more recently introduced open architecture controls, have enhanced the retrofit justification process by providing a wide range of feature and technology enhancements that have a positive impact on a company's manufacturing cost, quality, and delivery times.
