A leading automotive components prototyper, Regal International, produces modular subsystems for form and fit testing and engineering validation. Prototypes are molded in rapid tooling that can generate hundreds of accurate parts from production plastics. To enhance Regal's rapid moldmaking capabilities, toolmakers recently began evaluating Ciba's Ren Shape-Express//TM// moldmaking system. After producing 26 composite injection tools, Regal found that molds could be machined from the new board in half the time needed to mill steel. The board also facilitated cutting of mold ribs and lifters and permitted fast reworking of machined surfaces. This paper presents results of Regal's work with the new moldmaking system.
