Acrylic acid is a chemical that in the unrefined state is used to make acrylates and other derivatives; in the distilled state is used in superabsorbent polymers which are used largely in disposable baby diapers, and detergent polymers; is used in the production of hydrogels for contact lenses; is used in the production of copolymers for adhesives used on teeth; the monomer is used to increase stability and prevent premature coagulation in latex applications; the polymers are grafted on cotton and used to bind carboxide to shirts. Acrylic acid is highly reactive and will readily polymerize if not controlled by inhibitors.
