Peroxidase is used as a stabilizing agent in cosmetic formulations. Peroxidase is a naturally occurring enzyme and together with the thiocyanate anion and hydrogen peroxide it makes up the lactoperoxidase system (LPS). LPS functions as an antimicrobial agent and it aids in the preservation of milk and other foods. Lactoperoxidase from horseradish is commonly used in biochemistry applications such as western blots and immunohistochemistry to amplify a weak signal and increase the detection of the target protein.
