The variety of plastic materials available to the medical device manufacturer have increased dramatically in recent decades. As a result of this trend, design engineers are much more likely to find a plastic formulation capable of meeting the performance requirements of their application. Unfortunately, this wealth of plastic materials make it doubtful that there will be adhesive bond strength data available. To address this need, a systematic approach was taken to determine the effect which plastic formulation variables had on the bond strengths achieved using common medical device adhesives.
